Field performance of Pursuit 50A : a promising herbicide for legume establishment in oil palm planting.

Four field trials using Pursuit 50A [imazethapyr] were conducted for the establishment of leguminous cover crops (Pueraria phaseoloides and Calopogonium caeruleum) in 3 inland oil palm replants in Malaysia from November 1993 to March 1995. Three trials were conducted on cultivated soil and another on a minimum-tilled field. In all fields, 2-3 rounds of post-emergence herbicides were applied prior to the drilling of legume seeds. Pursuit 50A was tested at 150-400 g a.i per ha. The estate standard was included for comparison in all trials. Treatments were applied using calibrated estate spray equipment and trained sprayers. Trial results confirmed that Pursuit 50A at the tested concn was selective in action to leguminous cover crops. No crop phytotoxicity symptoms were observed on newly-planted oil palm seedlings throughout the period of the experiments. In all trials, treatments with Pursuit gave better legume establishment and control of Paspalum conjugatum, Ottochloa nodosa, Eleusine indica and Borreria latifolia compared to treatment plots using the estate practice. On cultivated soils, an application of Pursuit 50A either at pre- or early post-emergence timing resulted in 80% leguminous cover crop. The performance of Pursuit in minimum-tilled fields, though less satisfactory, provided better legume cover compared to the estate practice.
