Seed production and export of Malaysian oil palm planting materials.

Commercial dura X pisifera (D X P) planting materials are produced from genetically superior parents after extensive breeding and selection. Deli dura and AVROS pisifera are the most commonly used progenitors in seed production. Average yields of Malaysian D X P progenies are around 30 t/ha per year of fresh fruit bunches and 6.0 t/ha per year of oil. The 13 seed producers in Malaysia produce 50 million seeds annually and the industry uses 20-30 million seeds. The excess seeds are requested by Malaysian companies investing abroad. Though a general ban on the export of oil palm planting materials exists, Malaysian companies on joint-ventures with overseas parties are given flexibility and exemption to export enough seeds for their offshore plantations.
