Dynamics of nitrogen in a rape crop : modelling of the ecobalance.

Details are given of the N cycle as it relates to a rape crop. Since N pollution affects the balance of water and C in the soil and in the crop, the need is stressed for better understanding of water and N contents in different layers of soil throughout crop growth. A description is given of a dynamic model comprising a module of crop growth and development, a module of transformation of C and N in soil and a module of transfer of water, nitrates and heat in the soil; its development and associatedproblems on chalky soil in the Champagne region of France are outlined. It is emphasized that trials should be conducted at other sites, that refinements are necessary in measurement of N2O emissions and in understanding the effects of nitrogenous gases on chemical and thermal balance of the atmosphere.
