Study on the genetic diversity of coconut palm by means of RFLP.

Details of this study and its preliminary conclusions are reported under the following headings: objectives of a study of diversity; the markers already used (morphological traits; isoenzymes; polyphenols); molecular markers (RAPDs; the RFLP technique; application to coconut palm); and conclusion. A particularly interesting result was obtained using rice cDNA as a probe. Although the rice and coconut palm genomes have diverged considerably, the results encouraged pursuit of the possibility of exploiting the homology between cereals and coconut palm.
