The Spanish oilseed sector.
Spanish oilseed crushers handle 2 Mt of imported soyabeans annually, and 1 Mt of sunflower seeds. The Spanish oilseed market, however, is strongly affected by Spain's dominant position in the olive oil sector: 370 000 producers cultivate 200 millionolive trees on approximately 2 million hectares. The location and unit size are outlined and details of the olive oil processing capacity is presented. Soyabean processing is then detailed, indicating origin of imports, the firms involved and the capacity and location of crushing plants. The industry has an over-capacity of 750 000 tonnes. There is also over-capacity in the sunflower oil sector. This crop is grown mainly in Andalucia, Cuenca Aragon and Castilla-Leon. Crushers are either very small (30 000-40 000 t annually) or very large (over 100 000 t). The positions of the major firms active in the three sub-sectors are discussed, indicating their investment needs.
