The South American oils and fats industry : Present situation and recent developments.

The principal oils produced in South Amerca are soybean, sunflower, palm, palm kernel, beef tallow and fish oil. Hydrogenated oils and margarines are produced in some countries. The present research situation in fats and oils in South American varies between countries. In some countries, research teams have been productive for many years. Also, some technical magazines about fats, oils and derivatives are published. The variety of work carried out by South American scientists, the publication of various specialized magazines, and the large number of technical associations, shows that South America has reached an important stage of development in the field of fats and oils and their derivatives.
