Non-food uses of palm oil.

World oil production in 1985/86 is estimated at about 60 millions tonnes, which implies 43 por ciento over the last 10 years. A big increase (139 por ciento) in palm oil production (estimated about 8 million tonnes) in the same decade is due to increased in cultivated area. improvement in cultivation techniques and improvement of other surrounding technologies. Oil comsumption in Japan in 1985 was about 2.66 millions tonnes which means 39 por ciento increase over the last 10 years, however palm oil contributed to only 6 por ciento . In this report I would like to explain the possibilities and also basic problems to solve when palm oil is used as a raw material for the production of oleoic acid, which composes about half of palm oil fatty acids and is very important as a industrial raw material. Possible applications of oleoic acid by utilizing its double bound, and characteristics of highly purified oleic acid will be discussed to clear up the importance of this unsaturated fatty acid for industrial applications.
