Biology and Population Dynamics of Retracrus elaeis Keifer, 1975 (Acari: Eriophyidae) in Oil Palm in the Colombian Caribbean
Retracrus elaeis is an arthropod that frequently affects oil palm crops in Colombia. To know aspects of its biology, the life cycle will be extended under laboratory conditions (28°C, 80% RH), and the population fluctuation of this species, as well as that of the Phytoseiidae mites associated with its control in an oil palm plantation through monthly tests for 31 months. Population fluctuation was correlated using Spearman’s correlation coefficient with environmental factors of temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity. Life cyclelength from egg to adult is 20.7 ± 2.3 days, egg 7.1 ± 1.0 days; larva: 6.2 ± 0.8 days; nymph: 7.4 ± 0.5 days and adult longevity is 6.8 ± 4.4 days. Retracrus elaeis presents sexual and asexual reproduction arrhenotochy type, and females oviposit an average of 29 ± 4 eggs. No strong association was found between the populations of R. elaeis, and the environmental factors studied: relative humidity (-0.19), precipitation (-0.21), temperature (0.14), and populations of Phytoseiidae (-0, 18), but there is a moderate association between Phytoseiidae populations and temperature (0.36). A short reproductive cycle and the possibility of reproducing sexually and asexually can cause populations of R. elaeis to increase in oil palm plantations.
