Peste des petits ruminants : A threat for developing countries

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a viral disease of domestic and wild small ruminants. Its clinical signs may include respiratory distress, fever, erosive stomatitis, catarrhal inflammation of the ocular and nasal mucous membranes and diarrhoea. All these clinical signs, apart from the respiratory symptoms, are very similar to those of rinderpest (RP). However, while rinderpest can cause a serious disease in many Artiodactyl species, PPR seems to be specific to small ruminants for which it constitutes a serious constraint. In the past, this disease was designated by different names: stomatitis-pneumoenteritis-complex, "kata", pseudorinderpest, and goat plague. Now its universal scientific name is "peste des petits ruminants", the French name given by the first authors, Gargadennec and Lalanne, who described this syndrome in small ruminants in Côte d'lvoire, in reference to the clinical similarity with rinderpest. However, stomatitispneumoenteritis-complex is the designation that fits best with the clinical signs.
