Impacts of international wheat breeding research in the developing world, 1966-90
1986-90. Overall, varieties originating directly from CIMMYT crosses or from NARS crosses using a CIMMYT parent occupy 40 million hectares of wheat in the developing world. It is estimated that adoption of MVs from 1977 to 1990 contributed an additional US$ 3,000 million to wheat producers and consumers in the developing world in 1990. Rough estimates of the rate of return to investment in wheat research in 1977-90 indicate that investment in international wheat research continues to provide very high returns of the order of 50-60%.
