CIMMYT Annual Report 1998-1999: Science to sustain people and the environment
The message of this year's annual report is a simple one, but it bears repeating: at CIMMYT we conduct essential science to meet people's essential needs for food, for income, and for a healthy environment. We and our partners conduct science not for its own sake, but for the sake of millions of people who cannot see beyond the struggle to stay alive. It is true that the nations of the world together produce enough food to feed everyone on earth, but global society is not equitable. Hundreds of millions of people cannot buy or grow enough food to sustain themselves. Until the complex equation that governs their access to food changes somehow, these people will continue to struggle for the right to survive. At CIMMYT we know that science can change the equation.
