Results of the eighth International Triticale Yield Nursery (ITYN) 1976-1977

This report summarizes the results of the Eighth ITYN grown during the 1976-77 season. This yield nursery contained spring triticale lines which had demonstrated high yield and good adaptation in previous trials. Three replications were used in order to obtain a better estimate of yield. Advanced generation material is distributed by CIMMYT in the form of yield and screening nurseries. The screening nurseries which are not replicated, provide a wider range of genetic variability from which cooperators may select for adaptation, improved yield and disease resistance, etc. The number of entries in the screening nurseries varies and depends upon the number of high yielding and disease resistant lines available each year in the various programs. Material from the.se nurseries can be used directly for multiplication and commercial production, or indirectly in local breeding programs. Varieties released commercially from these sources can not be protected under breeders' rights legislation. The Eighth ITYN was sent to 110 cooperators in different cereal producing regions of the world. All triticale breeders were encouraged to send their best spring triticale varieties to be included in this trial.
