Herd reconstitution for African livestock keepers

Restocking as a rehabilitation strategy developed out of a growing awareness in the seventies and early eighties of the need for a new approach to pastoral development. Conventional approaches to pastoral development had proved ineffective at alleviating pastoralist poverty. Restocking: a guide was written in response to the growing interest in restocking with livestock following the drought of 1991-92 in eastern and southern Africa. It draws together the salient points from a number of rehabilitation projects in Africa, which can usefully help the practitioner decide whether there is a need for restocking in a given situation. The information and the checklists the book includes are a useful guide for the planner and development worker seeking to prepare a sensitive and purposeful programme of assistance for those most in need.
