ICTs: Start at the start
Awareness raising is the key issue for the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Africa. This is the main conclusion of the workshop on ICTs and Development of Agricultural Institutions organised by CTA early last November in South Africa. The participants, mostly managers in organisations working in the field of information management and agriculture, acknowledged the relevance of ICTs as a means of improving agricultural information flows. Access to information and its quality remain the first priority. Existing information systems and infrastructure (e.g., libraries) have to be incorporated in the ICT implementation processes in Africa. A 'connected' Africa can be built only when a solid foundation of education, training, and sensitisation has been laid.
