New-look institute for Burundi
Burundi has recently overhauled its national agricultural research institute to improve productivity in order to be able to respond better to farmers' needs. The Burundi Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ISABU), has reorganized and expanded its system of research workshops. These are an ISABU-designed experimental programme in which farmers, from the outset, identify the priority areas where they need help. Agricultural researchers and extension workers then take charge of transferring new, proven technologies to the farmers and obtaining their feedback. The major changes at ISABU affect financial administration, institutional structure, research programmes and the interaction between farmers and scientists. The new measures are the result of recommendations from collaboration between an advisory team from the International Service for National Agricultural Research (ISNAR) and ISABU managers. These changes should lead to enhanced status for ISABU within the country and put Burundi's national agricultural development onto a firmer footing. ISABU BP 795 Bujumbura - BURUNDI
