Bia improved yams
Researchers at the University of Nigeria have shown that the dormancy period of white yams (Dioscorea rotundata) can be broken by applying the growth regulator BIA (butyric indolic acid) to the tubers before planting. Farmers can thus schedule germination to coincide with the arrival of the rains so that the plants benefit fully from the growing season. Until now, plantings have taken place during the dry season, but not all of the tubers will have germinated by the time the rains arrive. This results in a crop with a variable age structure. Tests have shown that BIA enables plants to germinate at the same time, that such plants grow more quickly, provide new tubers sooner, and have much higher yields.
