Automation of yield recording and yield mapping in oil palm plantations.

This paper reports the evaluation of a purpose-built instrumented one-ton trailer to automate in-field weighing of fresh fruit bunches (FFB), production of yield map and tracking of FFB evacuation fleet in an oil palm estate. This system was able to achieve an in-field weighing accuracy of less than 1 per cent error using the palm oil mil! weighbridge weight as the standard, produce yield map on per harvesting task basis for precision agriculture, track and monitor the movements of the FFB evacuation mini-tractor, automate the weighing and recording of fresh fruit bunches in the field, generate crop reports required by the Estate Managers and Agronomists, replace the bunch count method of payment to harvesters and act as a security check against theft of FFB in transit. A black box equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and a memory chip to capture and store the data, and a wireless communication system to transmit data from the field to the estate office is currently being developed. It would replace the GPS readied on-board PDA.
