Ecological safety of paraquat with particular reference to soil.

The safety of paraquat to the environment is discussed, using data for its toxicity to crops and other organisms living in the soil. Paraquat has a low impact on non target organisms in terrestrial and aquatic environments, and does not bioaccumulate. The rapid adsorption and strong binding of paraquat to soil reduces exposure to the herbicide, thus ensuring that crops are not harmed and remain without residues. While adsorption to the soil slows down the degradation rate of paraquat (compared to that occurring on leaf surfaces), it does not result in an indefinite increase of paraquat residues in soil from continued use. The residues of paraquat in soils pose no significant risk to the environment, and do not move to surface water or groundwater by runoff or leaching.
