Field response of Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann, Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff) (Coleoptera: scolytidae) and their predators to different Semiochemicals in southern México

Trapping experiments were performed along the year in Pinus oocarpa Schiede ex Schlectendahl (Pinaceae) stands in Motozintla, Chiapas, México. Field responses to multiple-funnel Lindgren traps baited with commercial a-pinene plus either frontalin, ipsenol or ipsdienol were recorded for bark beetles and their predators. Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) was only attracted to frontalin plus a - pinene, Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Enoclerus ablusus Barr (Coleoptera: Cleridae) and Elacatis sp. (Pascoe) (Coleoptera: Salpingidae) were attracted to both combinations of ipsenol and ipsdienol plus a-pinene, Temnochila chlorodia Mannerheim (Coleoptera: Trogositidae) responded to all treatments. Morphological comparison of D. frontalis individuals attracted to traps with those arriving to trees under attack by D. frontalis, showed significant differences when different trapping dates were compared. From our results, we consider T. chlorodia to be a predator of D. frontalis and I. grandicollis, whereas E. ablusus and Elacatis sp. are predators of I. grandicollis in these forest stands. The differences in response to the tested semiochemicals, are discussed in the light of similar works.
