Evaluation of the fertirrigation and irrigation time concerning the productivity of the coffee

A field experiment was begun during 1997 to determine the effect of irrigation and fertigation on productivity and yield in a 13-year-old crop of coffee (Coffea arabica) cv. Catuai Vermelho, planted at spacings of 3.5 m between rows and 1 m within rows, in Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experimental design involved 4 main plots which were treated with manual applications of NPK fertilizer (1 plot) or fertirrigated with the same rate of fertilizer. Subplots were irrigated for 3 periods: 1 June to 30 September, 15 July to 30 September or 1-30 September. Unirrigated control plots received manual or fertigation applications of NPK fertilizer. Analysis of variance of data on productivity of the coffee (sacks/ha) during 1998-99 showed significant effects of fertilizer application and irrigation, but no significant interaction between these variables. Irrigation beginning in July or September increased productivity by 142 and 154 percent, respectively, in comparison with no irrigation or fertigation. These values represent an increased productivity of 33.3 and 36.1 sacks (60 kg)/ha. None of the treatments significantly affected the yield of coffee (litres of grain/60 kg sack).
