Cocoa by-products and their uses

Cocoa crop is new to India. Lack of information on its processing and poor marketing facilities are causes that lead to the waste of a good portion of the produce and also its by-products. Cocoa pod husk with its low theobromine content can be used as cattlefeed, raw or in the dried form and is comparable to good quality grass fed to dairy cattle. Cocoa shell can be used as part of the cattle feed. However, its theobromine content, present in large quantities, may be injurious to poultry and swine. It is also useful as a raw material for theobromine extraction. Discarded beans contain more than 50 per cent of cocoa butter, useful in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and chocolate industries. After extracting the cocoa butter and theobromine the residue of beans could be used as cattle feed. Cocoa by-products can also be used as good manure. Pectin produced from sweating is of poor quality but vinegar could be made from this as a cottage industry. Due to difficulties of marketing their produce, cocoa growers of India are in difficulties. Organising processing centres to ferment the produce and starting small scale industries to utilise the cocoa by-products will be a great help to them.
