Biología del Mecistorhinus tripterus F. (Hem. Pentatomidae) y su posible influencia en la transmisión de la moniliasis del cacao

The author discusse the available reference on Hemiptera in cacao, and notes the absence of information in relation to Mecistorhinus tripterus F., a pest which infests in great numbers the cacao trees of the Cauca Valley and others regions of Colombia. He made a detailed biological study of this insect including the nymphal stages. The life history of the insect was observed to be long (an average of 165 days). The insect was also observed to be rather prolific. An hymenoptera, possibly Phanuropsis semiflaviventris Girault., was observed to parasitize a high percentage of the eggs of Mecistorhinus tripterus F. With the object of determining the influence that Mecistorhinus tripterus F. has in the transmission of Monilia sp pod-rot of cacao the author did inoculation experiments in the field. Using pods that had been infected by these inoculations, determination of the presence of Monilia sp. was done by isolation in the laboratory. It was found that in pods inoculated with the conidia of Monilia sp. and insects of the above species gave an infection of 62 percent and pods inoculated with conidia of Monilia sp. alone gave an infection of 28 percent. Those on which only insects were placed showed no symptoms of disease. The author concluded by demostrating the importance of Mecistorhinus tripterus F., as an agent of inoculation of "moniliasis" in the cacao pod.
