Producao e selecao de cacaueiros híbridos na Bahia

For the purpose of replanting old plantations with improved material in Bahia, individual local selections were crossed with clones of different genetic and geographic origins. All these hybrids were compared with open pollinated "Catongo" as the control. The results of each experiment were analysed to compare the control with simple hybrids and also with groups of hybrids formed by crosses between each foreign clone and local clones belonging to the same genetic type. The crosses between the local clones were also compared with "Catongo". Yield and early maturity of the hybrid groups in relation to "Catongo" were analysed for each age group, independent of the experiment, to avoid the effect of soil, time of planting and management. It was found that the hybrid groups, with the exception of "Local x UF-221" and "Local x ICS-60", matured earlier and yielded more than the control. The crosses of local clones with Upper Amazon and with other local clones were better in yield and for early maturity when compared with crosses of local clones with "Trinitarios". In general, the yield of the hybrid groups at 3 years of age varied from 148 to 1.340 kg/ha and the control from 19 to 283 kg/ha, expressed in terms of dry cacao
