Método simplificado para produzir sementes híbridas de cacau por polinizacao manual controlada

With the object of examining the possibility of eliminating the difficult and time consuming task of protecting hand-pollinated flowers against contamination, unprotected pollinations were made between the local cacao cultivar "Catongo" which has white seeds and a number of other clones which have purple colored seeds to determine the level of natural contamination. The cultivar "Catongo" is a mutant form characterized by its complete absence of anthocyanin pigments in either the seed, fruits, flowers or leaves. Being a recessive character it enables one to identify hybrid seeds by the seed coloration or the color of the cotyledons and young leaves in the case of seedlings. The results from three consecutive years show that the average degree of contamination for unprotected hand-pollinations was 10.1 per cent in 1968; 14.9 per cent in 1969 and 12.0 per cent in 1970. These relatively low values would indicate that when large quantities of seeds are required for commercial planting, a system of unprotected hand-pollination would not be detrimentally affected by the level of natural pollination occurring through contamination
