Biotechnology at ILRAD [International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases, Nairobi, Kenya]
ILRAD's target diseases, East coast fever (ECF) and trypanosomiasis, are believed responsible for the deaths of 3 million cattle a year. In Africa alone, they restrict livestock from 7 million km2 of land that would probably support 120 million cattle and equivalent numbers of small ruminants. Through monoclonal antibody technology, tissue culture, and molecular biology, fundamental understanding of many aspects of theses two diseases has been significantly expanded. In addition, development of a vaccine against ECF seems likely
