Anther culture and its potential

Pollen-derived haploids are derived from a process that involves a switch from the normal development of pollen grains to a vegetative sporophytic pattern of development. The trigger is provided either by the sporophytic determinants carried over from the meiotic division preceding the formation of microspores or by totipotency. Although research on this technique is only just beginning in most African countries, marked advances have been made in other parts of the world. Attention is currently focused on methods for increasing the low embryogenic response of the pollen grains of most plants. Anther/pollen culture holds promise for the rapid production of pure lines from haploids or somaclonal variants, for use in direct crop improvement, or as a tool in other improvement strategies. It is also useful in classical genetic studies involving mutagenesis
