Quantificação do carbono em sistemas de uso-da-terra no distrito de José Crespo e Castillo, Peru
The objective of this study was to estimate the sequestration of carbon under various land-use systems (LUS) in comparison with that of cocaine (Erythroxylon coca Lam.) cultivation. The ten land use systems evaluated were: cocaine, secondary forest, and eight agroforestry systems (AFS): AFS citric (Citrus sinensis L) established for 30 and 15 yr; AFS cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) both traditional and improved; AFS pupunha (Bactris gasipaes Kunth); AFS coffee (Coffea arabica L); SPS Echinochloa polystachya HBK, and Paspalum conjugatum Berg. Established technology was used to estimate carbon contents. Unlike cocaine monoculture, the other LUS were characterized by great botanical diversity, which permitted the storage of different quantities of carbon, depending upon age of the systems, with those up to five years of age (AFScoffee, AFS pupunha, improved SSP) exhibiting greater carbon accumulation than those of older age. The AFS were similar in storage of carbon in total biomass and in aerial biomass, but varied in carbon storage in the soil and differed from cocaine cultivation.
