Differential foraging by flies Diptera and stingless bees Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponinae at dungs in tropical rain forest
When fresh human faeces and cattle dung were left together in the same Costa Rica tropical lowland rain forest habitat during the dry season (early March 1985), they attracted stingless bees and flies at different rates. The stingless bee Trigona silvestriana, Hemilucilia segmentaria (Calliphoridae), Calosphen sp. (Micropezidae) and Paragorgopis maculata (Otitidae) were found exclusively on human faeces during the daytime. While a few individuals of undetermined Sepsidae were also found on the humanfaeces, large numbers of these flies were found on the cowpats. These preliminary data indicate a marked differential pattern of resource utilization by dung insects for different types of faeces in this tropical habitat.
