Effect of salinity on water soluble tannin concentrations in Pelliciera rhizophorae and Rhizophora racemosa

A study was conducted to determine the effect of soil salinity on tannin concentration in the bark these two mangrove species, in the mangrove reserve forest of Sierpe-Terraba, Costa Rica. R. racemosa showed greater tannin concentrations in both oligohaline (14.4 plus or minus 0.8 percent) and polyhaline conditions (21.4 plus or minus 0.8 percent). For P. rhizophorae, values were 2.2 plus or minus 0.8 percent in the oligohaline zone and 11.8 plus or minus 0.8 percent in the polyhaline zone. Differences in tannin concentrationsbetween oligohaline and polyhaline zones were significant for both species.
