Body weight increment of Podisus distinctus (Stal) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), fed on Tenebrio molitor L (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) or Musca domestica L (Diptera: Muscidae)

Predatory pentatomids are important natural enemies of many insect species. The objectives of this study was to compare daily body weight increment of 4th and 5th instars and adults of Podisus distinctus (Stal) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) fed with Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) or with Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae). The final weight of 4th instar nymphs fed with T. molitor or M. domestica (27.5 plus or minus 2.01 and 27.5 plus or minus 1.86 mg for males and 35.4 plus or minus 1.95 and 32.4 plus or minus 1.16 mg for females) and 5th instar nymphs (63.2 plus or minus 2.49 and 65.6 plus or minus 5.48 mg for males and 77.9 plus or minus 2.81 and 85.2 plus or minus 3.09 mg for females) fed with T. molitor or M. domestica respectively, were similar, but there was significant differences in weight between adults of both sexes of P. distinctus fed with these prey. Weight increment was higher during the first 24 hoursfor 4th instar and relatively uniform for 5th instar nymphs of P. distinctus. Initial and final weights of the predator, with both prey, were higher for females (79.7 plus or minus 5.10 and 88.4 plus or minus 3.63 mg) than for males (52.4 plus or minus 5.46 and 47.1 plus or minus 8.98 mg), but no significant difference were found between insects of the same sex in both prey.
